1844 Helko Werk Germany Traditional Rheinland Pack Axe
Handmade in Wuppertal, Germany, these axes are named after the region’s famous Rhein River Valley. The Rhein, one of Germany’s most prominent geographical features, was a historically significant source of trade and growth for settlements in the region throughout the medieval period. Cutting axes like these were a daily necessity for people carving out towns and villages in heavily forested regions along the Rhein River. The Rheinland pattern – a traditional German wide-bit blade – is extraordinarily well suited for cutting work. A cross between a hatchet and a conventional axe, the Rheinland Pack Axe is designed to be lightweight, compact, and easy to carry while trekking through the wilderness. The weight and length allow for either one or two handed use. Compact in size, this pack axe is a highly versatile packing tool and will fit well on most packs. It will capably handle a variety of tasks, including felling small trees, clearing brush, limbing branches, splitting firewood, and making kindling. Each piece is handcrafted by Helko’s Master Smiths, lifelong artisans of metalcraft, using tongs on an open face drop forge. Minimal post supplementary work is performed, allowing each blade to proudly display its forging marks.

Great Axe – and Sheath

It has an area that is beginning to flake and will rust out eventually. The surface of the axe is rough and should have been smoothed out.The handle is great and hung correctly. My next axe will be a Gransfor Bruks which I will compare to the Helko Werk. This is not a $50 dollar axe and quality does matter. The reason I purchased the Helko Werk was for the…
