Tiny and sturdy First. This device (and all inReach actually) will not work without a subscription. The subscription is what allows it to connect to the Iridium satellite network. In other words, without a subscription is just a regular GPS (without maps) and a digital compass. Amazing functionality in such a small and light package and excellent battery performance so far. I just upgraded from my original InReach and was disappointed that it cost 20$ to switch devices. Their braindead website should support switching devices without contacting support or cancelling your service and starting up another plan. Other than that extra unexpected hurdle and cost, I am happy.I carried an original InReach on my PCT thru-hike in 2013 and it worked great.
