The Midland GXT1030VP4 is the High Visibility Yellow version of the very popular GXT1000VP4. The GXT1030VP4 are 50 Channel Waterproof GMRS Radios with NOAA Weather/All Hazard Alert. The GXT1030VP4 features the standard 22 GMRS Channels plus an additional 28 Channels. The GXT1030 meets the JIS4 Standard of exposure to heavy rain for 30 minutes and features the Maximum Power allowed for GMRS Handheld Radios for up to a 36-Mile Range. Weather Scan finds the nearest NOAA broadcast to stay up to date with the latest weather and hazard information. In addition to important weather announcements, All Hazards Alert means the GXT1030VP4 will receive other emergency announcements such as Child Abduction (Amber Alert), Nuclear Power Plant Warnings, Biological Hazard, Fire, and Landslide Warnings. Features include the Whisper which allows you to speak quietly and still be heard clearly by others and SOS to send out a distress sound for emergency situations. The Group Call allows you to make “direct calls” to other people within the group without alerting the entire group. The GXT1030VP4 features a Vibrating Alert for silent notification and 9 Level E Vox for Hands Free operation. Top of the Line FRS/GMRS Radios I have the GXT1030vp4 which is black and yellow. Comes with everything you could need including a 12v adapter for the charger base. Radios are solid and feel better than most consumer FRS/GMRS radios. I contacted Midland and these are their top of the line consumer radios. I researched many available brands and models and this GXT1030 shines. RX and TX is crystal clear. These are UHF radios so the terrain will determine the distance they will go. Beware of the battery problems. The range is decent, about what I expected. Which is to say no where near the “36 miles” advertised. But I knew that going in….in our residential neighborhood of mostly single story homes but heavy tree cover, the kids can ride to their friend’s houses, all less than 1/2 mile by road, and can still call. BATTERY LIFE IS SHORT – Be wary These radios were field-tested in the mountains over a period of two weeks. Sitting basically idle (no transmissions, very little receive) the batteries would become weak enough to cause the radio to automatically drop from Hi power to Low power after 4 – 6 hours of idle “on” time.
