My favorite shelter for backpacking and car camping This bivy has been my preferred shelter for the last 3 or 4 years and I’m outdoors quite a bit. During the summer months I’ll be backpacking in the Sierra Nevada most weekends and in the winter I can usually be found running around the desert. This has been the best shelter of any of the various tents and bivys I’ve tried. Serious zipper and ventilation under-design. Hood does not stay put. Always wanted a bivy, so I took a shot on this Advanced Bivy from OR. There are two poles with this bivy. One for the “tent” area up front, and the other to support the hood and its movement (no poles past your chest). This bivy is very warm, and like all GoreTex products, it pretty much stops breathing when it is raining or the bivy is otherwise wet. Expect some warm nights, even without the rain. I found that in a heavy rain, the bivy stayed dry overall, but you must leave the zipper open…
